Went into the movie just wanting a good shark movie and the setup was good. Unfortunately the 2 leading ladies were very unconvincing and tended to over react in every situation. They seemed unnatural and stunted any rhythm the movie had going. The movie seemed to drag on for a bit especially since you don't see a shark for over 50 minutes which could have easily been cut in half. You never truly care for the characters as you don't learn enough about each one to have concern for their well being. Also the characters seem to not understand anything about sharks as they do the opposite of what common sense tells you to do. If there is a shark around you why would you random splash and freak out instead of remaining calm? Yes it's scary but you are only attracting them more. Why swim to a someone who is bleeding profusely? Why when you see a large school of fish suddenly leaving an area would you think it's safe? Also if you're on a rock out of the water right after you've seen a shark why not wait at least a little while for it to swim away so that you have a few extra minutes to get to the main island?

Fmovies: Catch this at the sitges film festival Monday morning. It's an average "isolation" predator movie like open water etc.. but the main difference with this movie it's the mood. There's more dynamics in this movie and of course we get to see the great white shark in all their glory. it's a very entertaining movie and the shots with the shark are frigging awesome, you have to keep in mind that the actors/stunts were there for REAL! it's a cool little movie that makes an improvement over open water but loses the surprise. there are cool underwater shots in which you can't see anything but water and fishes in a getaway that froze your dorsal spine... great but not a revolution

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much at all when I sat down to watch "The Reef" at what I like to call "Ye Olde Online Movie Theater." I figured there'd be a few unintentional laughs, quite a bit of gore and bad cgi plus, hopefully, a few fair maidens to ogle as I drifted off to sleep.

Boy, was I in for a hell of a shock! This is honestly one of the most intensely scary movies I've ever experienced. In fact, at several points I was literally vise-gripped onto the edges of my LazyBoy as if it was some tiny life raft barely keeping me afloat in deep, dark Pacific waters.

Think of all the times you've been in the ocean and wondered, "What's that large, dark shape coming towards me?" Is it seaweed, a big school of bait-fish, or something much more sinister? Ever get a serious chill up and down your spine during one of those moments? If so, this movie will be perfect for you if you can handle your fear.

This is, without a doubt, even with a few flaws here and there, the 2nd best shark movie ever made. In some ways, it's even better than Jaws.

It certainly didn't need any theme music at all to help create feelings of terror inside me as I watched The Reef and I don't scare easily.

The Reef fmovies. Following in the wake of the popular "Jaws" movies, there have been a recent wave of these shark survival/lost at sea movies around. And "The Reef" is actually one of the better movies in the genre.

The story is pretty easy to follow, a yacht gets capsized and starts to sink, and a group of people decide to swim for an island. Well, given the choice of being left on a sinking boat caught in the currents or taking your chances and swimming to land, well the choice is fairly obvious.

Anyway, what makes this movie stand out from others like "Adrift" and "Open Water" is that there is much more shark time, and you actually get to see the shark in good views. And also, somehow you start to, in an odd way, cheer on when you see the shark, because the movie is constantly building up suspense and thrills, and you just want these to peak. And there are some nice peaks to these thrills, trust me. I am not going to ruin anything and say what it is, but I liked it.

I think the movie captured human nature when caught in a hopeless situation and when people start having to respond to the chaos around them. The dialogue was good and the actors portrayed their characters very good and in very believable manners.

However, what puzzles me was that it would be the same shark that is stalking the people throughout the movie. That seems very weird. And also, like someone else pointed out, what was up with the constant taking off and putting on the goggles that Luke was doing? That made no sense at all.

But all in all, "The Reef" is definitely worth your time, especially if you like shark movies, or movies that tear on the human psyche.

'The Reef' is a shark flick I rented out recently having absolutely no prior knowledge of its existence, yet however the gamble pleasingly paid off.

A group of individuals find themselves in an awkward situation when their boat overturns (assumingly by a shark), and a dilemma is pondered. Do they stay above the overturned boat? Or swim hoping to find a nearby island? Well choices are made and this does involve crossing paths with sharks.

'The Reef' featuring primarily Aussie actors (no surprise being an Aussie film), does develop its characters, so we do care to an extent what happens to them.

This film is highly suspenseful; you never really know when a shark will attack. For a low budget Australian film this movie is fantastic in keeping you on your toes.

It's a shame that widely distributed films such as the terrible "Shark Night 3D" will reach a much wider audience than this little gem. If you get the chance to see this and you crave shark and/or thriller movies, don't miss out. "The Reef" wont disappoint.

Luke (Damian Walshe-Howling) welcomes his friend Matt (Gyton Grantley) and his girlfriend Suzie ( Adrienne Pickering) that come from London and Matt's sister and Luke's former girlfriend Kate (Zoe Naylor) that comes from Sydney to sail with him and the sailor Warren (Kieran Darcy-Smith) in a sailboat. However, the vessel hits an underwater rock and capsizes with an opening on her bottom. Luke advises that they should swim in the north direction to reach the Turtle Island, in Queensland, Australia, while they have strength since there is a current moving the stranded boat in the opposite direction of land but Warren prefers to stay on the hull waiting for help since there are sharks in the water. The quartet swims, but they are hunted by a great white shark.

"The Reef" is a tense and realistic combination of "Open Water" and "Jaws". The performances are top-notch and transmit the sensation of fear to the viewer and the attacks of the white shark are impressively real. My vote is seven.
