Wise Guys (1986)

DeVito (Harry) and Piscopo (Moe) are a great team. Both of them play their parts to perfection and Piscopo (in the funeral/suicide attempt scene) even sells his extreme grief without even saying a word. I think he is highly underrated as an actor. DeVito plays the well intentioned snake oil salesman to a T. Every idea he has goes wrong in his quest for "respectability", and he drags Moe down with him in every endeavor. But their loyalty to each other keeps them going.

This movie is funny from the get go and even tosses in the tear-jerking twist that throws you for a complete loop. Lou Albano is perfectly cast as Frank "the Fixer" Acovano. He's a major highlight of the movie. It's well written, acted, and just a very funny film. If you haven't seen it you should rent it ASAP.

Fmovies: One of the funniest and entertaining mob flicks I have ever seen. The talented Danny De Vito and Joe Piscopo shine in Wise Guys with a ton of laughs. But what totally made this movie for me was Captain Lou... The Fixer. His character was da bomb - a rough, foul mouthed, tough guy that was always ready to kick some donkey :o) The trouble these guys get into and how they try to solve the problems with da boss is really something else haha.

I see a lot of lower ratings on the film here on the site... don't let those low ballers fool you. This movie is a classic, with a ton of legendary Hollywood talent that you should check out if you have the opportunity to do so.

This is a great gangster spoof movie. It is probably one of the funniest gangster movies ever. Devito and Piscopo are great together, however, Lou Albino, as Frank the fixer, steals the show. He stole every minute of the film that he was in. It was almost like watching an old marx brothers film, where you only keep your eyes on groucho, in the scenes that he is in. In this one, you keep your eyes on Frank the Fixer. The acting is funny and the script is also very clever. I would put it as one of the funniest movies of the 80's

Wise Guys fmovies. Mildly enjoyable diversion seems grossly out of place it De Palma's canon. The premise is interesting - two loser hoodlums (Danny DeVito and Joe Piscapo) try to screw over a mob boss and end up getting hunted down. However, it is never particularly funny and the story isn't really that interesting. De Palma's directorial mastery is nowhere to be seen here - the direction is competent but the script never really gives him a chance to demonstrate his skills. Not as bad as some make it out to be, but certainly a failure, especially considering that it came between Body Double and Casualties of War, two of De Palma's best films.

One of the most entertaining movies ever made. A true Classic! Watched as a teenager and grew up trying to emulate a lot of this movie using it's timeless one liners even today. Funny, smart and exciting. Met Joe Piscapo decades later and used the "thank you Mr. Acavano" he was blown away. Sure he went home that night and said Holy sh** that guy remembers the lines! I watch it twice a year, still kills me all the time!

I've just caught it on TCM and can't wait the 5 weeks till it comes out on DVD. This is a gangster spoof at its best, full of lovable characters well played by top actors of the mob genre. Danny DeVito and Joe Piscopo make a great loser couple, Dan Hedaya stars as the dreary mob boss, whose henchmen include Frank Vincent and hilarious Lou Albano that steals every scene he's in. We even get to see Harvey Keitel in a classy supporting role! The plot is simple and has been done before and after, but rarely with such charm and lightness. With a current rating of 5.2, it's a severely underrated gangster comedy able to deliver entertaining evening for every fan of the genre.
