I was looking forward to watching this one, even a halfhearted blatant Descent/Wrong Turn ripoff could have worked if the whole thing wasn't buried under such an annoying script. Starts of with some promising landscape shots but as soon as the climbing starts it turns out one member of the group has vertigo. Sure there are worse ideas than putting a guy with vertigo on a voluntary mountain hike but almost the whole first half of the movie solely relies on that to create tension and panic. Combined with the weak acting of this guy, the rest of the group (only the grumpy ex-boyfriend character was kinda neutral) and some of the most uninspired by- the-numbers dangerous situations it only takes about 20 minutes until I started to keep my fingers crossed for them to die all at once within the next 5-10 minutes. Oh and and after they completely lost it the Descent/Wrong Turn ripoff starts, emphasis more on the wrong turn side.

Fmovies: I did not know anything about Vertige before watching it, except for the fact that it was a French horror movie. After having watched the movie, I can say that I found it to be a rehash of various North American movies from the genre, something which is exacerbated by the prefabricated characters and predictable clichés. However, that did not avoid me from being moderately entertained with this film.

The part of Vertige dedicated to the mountaineering is well filmed, and I guess that the fans of that sport will find it much more exciting than I did. The Croatian landscapes are so amazing that I would like to visit them only for the views (let's accept it, I even feel vertigo when I am climbing stairs, so the only mountaineering I could do would be from a helicopter). However, when we reach to the top of the mountain, it seems that another movie begins, and we are in front of a typical story about "young people lost in the woods".

Nevertheless, the movie kept me moderately entertained as I previously said, mainly because of Abel Ferry's dynamic direction. As for the actors, they did not have too much substantial material to work with, and they do what they can with their roles. In conclusion, I can give Vertige a slight recommendation despite its various fails.

Another french thriller, with a group of people getting themselves into trouble. Of course some decisions they make, are really bad and the peril they find themselves in, will divide them (more or less and no, no pun intended).

But what makes this worth-while are the characters and the actors portraying them. You have quite some different people and the tension in the group helps the movie move along. Which is of course necessary with a movie like this. It's not that you will really like them, but they are different personalities and everybody has at least one scene he/she can shine.

Another thing that I would like to see (maybe in the inevitable American Remake?): The movie in 3-D. There were quite a few scenes, that would have made sense in 3-D, were even the "flat" version looked "3-D-ish" ... At least that's how it felt for me :o)

High Lane fmovies. What is it with France lately. Really, they are making flicks I really like. I remember a time when they only made blah blah movies. If you have seen The Descent then this one is one you are going to like, only they don't descent but they climb. A bunch of friends are out for a hike and by doing that they would like to climb some mountains. But they are unlucky. The pass to the mountains is closed but hey, it's a horror so they ignore it and start climbing. The shots made while climbing are fabulous. If you have fear of heights than you will have it in some shots. But of course something goes wrong. They are making too many risks and happen to become isolated on a rock. And from there on the f lick really starts. I can only tell you that it's going to rock (what's in a name) hard and typical for a french movie there is no happy ending. The blood flows frequently and sometimes even gory. The movie also is here and there really brutal. I just can understand why nobody is talking about this flick. It's just great, the only thing I don't get is the flashes our main actress gets from a hospital. But after all, this one is straight in your face...another gem from France

I stay wondering why so many directors and screenplay writers of wannabe-horror movies ruin the good ideas they have in the beginning. This movie starts really good, it seems to deal with hobby mountain-climbing and interpersonal tensions. Indeed, mountain-climbing can turn out to be real horror if you are not particularly good at it and if you take a closed (certainly not without a reason) path. In the first 1/2 hour of the movie, nice camera shots and great landscapes convey a feeling of vertigo and a vague sense of danger - which is very, very credible in the given situation. Things can go wrong, ropes can tear, vertigo can drive you to madness, you can get lost in the mountains, there can be a tempest - all that is horror, because it is likely to happen in real life. So WHY the hell is there any need for "boosting" a life-like situation with some maniac moron hunting the characters? WHY do they always turn a real horror situation into a stereotyped, paper-thin, seen-over-a-thousand-of-times slasher? It is the same with "The Descent" which had excellent premises to get really scary (in the end, there are not many things as gruesome as being trapped in some huge subterranean labyrinth of holes without any map) but instead, decided to put in some stupid monsters which ruined the whole suspense and the sense of horror. Horrific are only things which seem realistic or in some way convey the sense of the possibility to get realistic. There is no need for additional "boost"! Folks, show me a horror movie based on completely natural premises and the appropriate development of characters in the given situation - and I will sing you a love song. But it seems easier to get some mad hunter or monsters in than to develop real tensions and real situations.

A Group of friends decide to do some weekend rock climbing, to bond together through one of the friends having a traumatic experience, as her work as a nurse. What starts off as a lot of fun, turns into a nightmare when they encounter some problems, leaving them stranded on the mountain with nowhere to go. To add insult to injury, they are being stalked by a Mountain man, who doesn't like the fact that they are in his territory. Let the hunt begin!

First off, the first half of this film is absolutely incredible! The cinematography is absolutely astounding and will draw you into it from the start. The rock climbing scenes left my hands sweating, which is something that happens to me, as I have a fear of heights. So for a film to do this to me, shows how sensational the camera angles were in this very memorable experience. There were some genuinely spine tingling moments of suspense, which I can liken to the movie "Cliffhanger". You really are on the edge of your seat for a good 40 to 50 minutes. Unfortunately, when the slasher element kicks in, the movie becomes a major disappointment. The villain was not very memorable and the kills lacked creativity. The annoying characters didn't add any added incentive to feel sorry for their situation, so when the emotional scenes take place, there is just no sense of loss. As the movie ends, you will be left scratching your head, wondering how the director made a meal of what should have been a classic. Thankfully the first half of the film makes it worth the effort to have at least one viewing.
