Eega (2012)

I was initially drawn to this movie because of it's similar premise with the H.P. Lovecraft/Hazel Heald story "Winged Death". Eega is not your typical fare, especially as an American unaccustomed to the movies of India. The first quarter of this film feels like you're watching the love child of a car/jewelry advert and music video. That's not to say it's bad it's just atypical and at times distracting.

Overall I found the story to be somewhat predictable and it veered from a sickening sweet to the dark and sinister. The acting is pretty good throughout but the actor playing the villain really shines.

The CG effects are sub-par compared to a Hollywood block buster but despite this I found myself forgetting I was watching a very obviously CG fly which I took as a good sign.

I would say if you're in the mood to experience something different, to step outside of the rehashed Hollywood garbage, are open to a movie that teeters from whimsical to sinister, and want to watch a moral dance between what amounts to a mob boss and a CG fly give this gem a shot.

Fmovies: To say this is a creative wonder of Indian Cinema is an understatement for the word understatement. I say this because, if you read the synopsis for this movie before watching it - the ridiculousness of the plot will leave you thinking how did this ever get made. There are a thousand ways this movie could have easily gone bad, but to come out of each scenario in flying colors is itself a huge achievement. I have seen all movies of the director S.S. Rajamouli and would have never guessed he was capable of this level of creativity, story structure and most of all subtlety. Considering the limitations that plague all the big movie houses of Indian cinema when it comes to visual effects, what Rajamouli achieved here is phenomenal.

Nani (Nani) is in love with Bindhu (Samantha) which she does not reciprocate though she has a soft spot for him. When Sudeep (Sudeep) who is a millionaire and always gets what he wants has his eyes on Bindhu, realizes that she is in love with Nani. Sudeep kills Nani to clear his way to make advance on Bindhu. Nani is reborn as a housefly and vows to avenge his death and protect his love.

Let us first try to dissect the ridiculousness of the plot. The fly (Eega in Telugu) does not have any telepathic, telekinetic or healing powers. It is just a common housefly but with a determination. How can it possibly affect a bull of a cruel intelligent man with everything at his disposal defines the innovative script. Rajamouli throws in a healthy bunch of ideas on what all ways that a housefly can give literally sleepless nights to the antagonist well helped by accepted norm of coincidences in Indian cinema. Adding to that the lead female character is a micro artist who extends her expertise to equip the housefly with a mask and weoponized gloves.

When it comes to a default Rajamouli movie there is a certain pattern that he normally follows. The protagonist is a regular guy who gets placed in an extraordinary circumstance while inducing all the commercial elements of song and action sequences in the precise positions delivering a guaranteed hit with the masses. Here he sheds off everything that made his earlier blockbusters (well most of it) and comes up with a fresh presentation that works wonders. A special commendation to Sudeep, though he plays your default villain of Telugu cinema - does it with comic book style panache. Background score by M.M. Keeravani is as usual elevated for Rajamouli movies, cinematography is excellent especially in the stages when the fly is just born. Samantha has an important but a very simple role to play and she does a decent job. The extended climax is completely unnecessary and it is intended especially for Telugu audience craving for a happy ending. Another important aspect to be considered here is that, when taken into account of other creature based movies like 'Finding Nemo' or 'A bugs life' or even 'Wall-E', all these characters have a well defined face (at least eyes and eye brows) which help the animators show real expressions which was not possible here. The animators have to rely on just body language to show all the emotions where they do an excellent job.

Original, creative, audacious and ridiculous

Elements like the below are an icing on the cake : 1. Eega doing its best to prevent Sudeep from getting intimate with Bindu.

2. Eega's teasing gestures to Sudeep, which is funny and also lends an aura of heroism around the fly.

3. Eega's song where it challenges Sudeep is not only well-placed but also an integral part of the film.

4. The character of Bindu being made a part of Eega's plot is superb. Kicha Sudeep's performance in Eega is getting rave reviews from various quarters. With his wonderful acting, the actor has won the hearts of the audience. However, his fan followers from Karnataka had one more reason to be thrilled

Eega fmovies. Director SS Rajamouli is one of those directors who have never tasted a flop in their career. He takes film-making a challenge and enjoys it as a passion and not for money. He has taken an insect as his hero in Eega and made the film, which is so gripping and makes the audiences to sit on the edge of their seats biting their nails. Sudeep (Sudeep) is a billionaire and women are his weakness. He always wants to tread wrong routes to achieve what he wants. He is ready to kill even his friend to bag what he wants. He sets his eyes on Bindu (Samanta), a miniature sculpture maker. Nani (Nani) is in love with her. Learning her love towards Nani, Sudeep bumps him off. Just before his death, Nani comes to know that Bindu also loves him. So he takes a rebirth as an Eega (housefly). Though it is an insect, it remembers everything in its past life and wants to take revenge on Sudeep. The rest of the story deals with how the housefly takes revenge on Sudeep. Performance: Though he had a very limited screen presence, Nani has proved that he is a talented artiste. Samanta has also proved that she could perform well and also filled the glamor slot. Although Sudeep is a villain, he has the screen presence from beginning to end. He has given an extraordinary performance. He is excellent in action. The housefly, which is a graphical object is the hero in Eega. The sentimental scenes between the heroine and Eega, the revenge scenes with the villain are excellent. Rajamouli is successful in creating the exact expressions of Eega with the help of animators and graphic designers. Technical: Senthil Kumar's cinematography is extra-ordinary and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao has done a very good job. S Ravinder's art work is also worth praising. MM Keeravani composed two songs for this film, but his entire work is on background score. He has given wonderful re-recording, which elevates every scene. When it comes to direction, SS Rajamouli's work needs no mention. Taking a small point, which he heard in his childhood, he has brought out an excellent film. The storyline and the plot are perfect. The presentation is superb and the narration is extraordinary. In fact, the director himself is the hero in Eega because the housefly is a graphical object. Remarks: As Ram Gopal Varma's predicted, the film will definitely collect Rs 100 crore. The film, which has been made with Hollywood standards, will mesmerize audiences of all age groups and classes. It is must watch film. Watch it to enjoy Rajamouli's graphical wonder. PS: The film would be extraordinary if you can watch it in multiplexes

This movie is worth Watching .. Wonderful work by all CG artist and all the technical artist behind the making....! It Deserves an Oscar. A sure Benchmark. Story-Screenplay-Bg Music and Soundfx SuperB Great storytelling Worth to watch First Day First Show... Hatz off to the CG work...would be really happy to know if this was made in India. Anyways Superb! Its a complete family entertainer...with Sweet gentle love..Action.. and World class CG. Kids will love it except for few dramatic shots... Logically great work done. How often have you seen a director telling you the story of his to-be directed film on the day of muhurat? How often have you laughed on hearing a silly storyline? How often have you seen a film which sounds silly but makes you wonder over it? Well you need not answer any of the questions above but what matters for everyone is that SS Rajamouli has created a film which stands way above the normality and entertains its patrons too. The story of Eega can be told in a simple manner. A boy falls in love with a girl. The girl is wanted by another sinister and powerful man. Sensing that the lover boy would be a threat to his dubious designs, the powerful man kills him off. The lover boy is born again as a housefly and is out to take a revenge over his killer. But rather than the story it is the process of experience the journey of revenge and the process of how a housefly creates havoc for such a dangerous person and makes him pay for his mistakes. The process itself is so good and hilarious that every time the fly makes its appearance before the villain there are fireworks and the proceedings are just logical and very believable. The performances of the lead cast are very laudable. Sudeep steals the show with his antics. His minute expressions coupled with anger, irritation and humor are to be experienced. His is a complex role portraying various emotions and Sudeep just excels. He is one actor who is actually a superstar in Kannada and yet accepted a negative role in his debut Telugu film. Kudos to him. Samantha looks beautiful as girl next door and the object of villain's desire. She tugs at hearts and also acts vengeful. Nani should be lauded for taking up this film in-spite of very well knowing that his role would be very limited one more like a guest appearance. He made an impact with his presence and his pairing with Samantha is fresh and youthful. Coming to the direction part, SS Rajamouli takes a leap into the next league of directors. He now can claim part in that elite group of film makers who have changed the trends of cinema. He is the only director who has not tasted a failure and Eega would continue the trend. He broke many a conventions with this film. His greatest trick in this film is to keep the story and screenplay very simple not taxing the minds of the audience. Though he employs high VFX in creating the fly and its adventures, he makes the eega look lovable and likable. His other biggest victory lies in utilizing every department properly. The other heroes other than Rajamouli for the film behind the camera were KK Senthil Kumar (Cinematography), MM Keeravani (Music) and Makuta (VFx). These departments have helped Rajamouli to visualize his dream of telling a bedtime story effectively onto the screen. Makuta have done a wonderful job of creating this creature and making it lovable without making it look grotesque. The VFx utilized in the film are of top quality and set new standards in Indian cinema after Robot. Keervani's music deserves a special mention as the maestro proves that given an exciting story, he would create wonders with his own talent. If the eega which appears on screen communicates with the audience, it is due to the background score of Keeravani only. KK Senthil Kumar once again proves that he is the best when dealing with high budgeted technical extravaganzas as he understands the directors vision and his camera just catches the proper nuances of the minute creature.
