This movie was bad from the moment Val Kilmer's bloated, cosmetically altered face appeared on screen until the deplorable ending.

Val Kilmer is the "Traveler" (which was interesting because he was called the drifter in the movie. Maybe they didn't want this movie to be confused with the half dozen or so other projects called "The Drifter"). He mysteriously appeared at an isolated New York police station being manned by six cops. He said he wanted to "confess" to some murders yet his behavior was that of someone with ill-intentions.

There was one big problem with the movie. The problem was Val Kilmer. His pale, bloated face evoked pity not dread or fear. He looked more like an oddity than an awe-inspiring ominous figure. And his conspicuous silence at times wasn't spooky it was frustrating. He was like a person intentionally ignoring you, you're not afraid of him you want to slap him. Dopey, doughy and annoying is how I would describe him.

The Traveler's interest in "confessing" to some murders as well as his strange behavior had the police on edge. They got more agitated the moment an officer was mysteriously killed and then another.

There was no question about the fact that the Traveler's presence had something to do with the deaths and they quickly disclosed why the Traveler may have been there. The movie was following the malevolent-killer-entity code--then they threw in a twist in the form of a revelation of sorts. From the point of the absurd revelation until the end was a sheer drop off of a cliff. Whatever redeeming value the movie did have was totally incinerated. It quickly accelerated from bad to worse like someone was throwing gasoline on it.

Val, my man, what happened??

Val, my man, what happened??

A man (Val Kilmer) walks into a police station and says he is confessing to a murder. Unfortunately for the police, he will not give his name and will not volunteer much else.

We should talk about Val Kilmer. Another reviewer said he was like wax, and despite being a great actor has really slipped into some terrible roles. Kilmer's career as a whole is mess -- for every outstanding role he has had, he has had two terrible ones. Do directors simply not know how to utilize him?

This movie as a whole would have been better if someone else handled it. The acting is a bit weak, the direction is average. The musical score is actually quite good, and the general plot is creative and clever -- again, if someone else had made it, this could have been a big hit. (Heck, imagine this in the hands of David Fincher.)
