For starters, I LOVE westerns. They're my favorite genre, and it's sad how in decline they are at this time in cinematic history. That being said...I just couldn't get into this film.
Let me start with what's good: -the costuming and weaponry are very well done. It really feels like the early 1880s. -they stuck to the main historical points of the conflict between Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid. Everything that was supposed to happen, happened. -the acting was very well done, especially considering the lousy script they were given.
Now, let's look at where this film falls apart: -the dialogue is just terrible. It feels like Deadwood, but worse. I'm not one to clutch pearls at profanity (Deadpool is one of my favorites, if that's any indication), but this film just had too much for a western. If all I heard was the audio, I'd think the setting was 1980's Texas, not 1880's New Mexico. The use of language is just all wrong. -the plot is nonsense. Why even bother having Billy The Kid in it? This film could've literally been exactly the same if it was just about the actual kid. It's like they couldn't decide between being a fictional western, and a biography. Pick a lane and stay in it, because trying to do each of them together is doing them both a disservice. The marketing for this film made it seem like it was solely about Billy The Kid, which is a film I would've loved to see...but not this. -due to the nonsensical plot, more action would've helped this film out. Or, a MUCH bigger build up to the final gunfight (think Open Range...best build up to the most realistic gunfight I've ever seen in a western).
It could've been so much more, but it just falls flat.
Fmovies: Acting was superb and script along with dialogue excellent. Lived in the desert and the scenery brought back intense memories. I'm a western freak so looked forward to seeing this film. The Kid, Jake Schur will be seen many times after making his debut.
This movie is ungodly slow for starters. Mix in the fact that they do g really build up the characters or relationships between the characters and you're left wondering WTF the entire time. Pratt and Hawks do ok in their roles, but it can't save this movie. The kid is in maybe half of the movie and there is really no point to him being there. Disappointing
The Kid fmovies. If your not a western lover don't see it or review it. As a western it has a very good story. The acting is top notch and the direction is also top notch. It's bloody at times but it fits the story perfectly. It was a lawless time afterall . If your tired of paying $11 dollars or so to see CGI SCENES, SEE THIS.
Veteran character actor D'onofrio hits all the right notes with this unique but utterly nostalgic western about a young man who gets involved with rescuing his sister alongside Billy the Kid (a perfectly cast Dehan). What ensues are complex character pieces, great dialogue, bloody action, and a chilling special appearance from Hollywood golden boy Pratt. The only complaint I had was the performance of the sister.
B+
I'm not exactly sure what this film's ultimately message was, other than 'don't let one mistake define you' or 'don't let others define who you are' but I admittedly had some fun with this small western directed by Vincent D'Onofrio. Chris Pratt, Dane DeHaan and the lead kid, Jake Schur were great but the reason to see 'The Kid' is undoubtedly Ethan Hawke. Every time I think Hawke will take on a role unfit for him he proves me wrong. I'm of the mindset that he's one of the greatest actors of the last 30 years to be honest. His movies may not be commercially a huge success, but push comes to shove, there may not be a more consistently fantastic actor working today, period. His role as the real life Pat Garrett is yet another great example, and perhaps the sole reason why I left the theater very pleased.
