I'm not joking, this monstrosity can cause a major trauma to any sensitive kid. It can, and will, cause nightmares. I saw it in Italian when it was released, and I remember I was simply astonished, I couldn't believe my eyes. This is easily the worst cinematic experience of my life. I would like to point out, that because of the typical servile attitude of the Italian critics (Benigni had become a sort of national hero after "La vita è bella"), nobody had the courage to say this stinker was a bomb of gigantic proportions when it first came out. Fortunately it was rightfully thrashed everywhere else. The acting is atrocious, and the direction is so bad it causes consternation, everything in this abomination is just utterly wrong. The special effects are a pain to the eyes, and the casting of Nicoletta Braschi as the fairy, is not only ludicrous, it is also strangely creepy, and a clear sign that this was the project of an ego that had grown out of proportions, almost lingering with madness. It will go down as one of the worst movies ever made, and could therefore gain a cult status (it could actually be revalued as a classic of visionary horror). Unforgettable, in a very bad way…

Fmovies: I am so relieved to finally watch a movie that tells the story along the lines as it was originally told rather than rewriting it and watering it down or sugar coating it to make it more acceptable for those who can't take dark situations from a child's story. This movie, with its sets, not-so-mind-blowingly-overdone effects, and layout makes it a very charming retelling of the classic tale, though I have sadly seen the horribly done dubbed version and wish to see the subtitled one instead. People would be turned off seeing grown men playing as boys, especially by Roberto Benigni playing the titular character... however, once you watch it, you can see how well they play the part, giving the whole movie a rather different kind of charm where grownups play boys. I find it sad that this charming movie is bashed and even nominated a Razzie just because they only minded the dubbing or the fact it's nothing like the Disney movie. Give this movie a chance and watch it in a different way if you are truly an aficionado for the classic tale; you will then really love this film.

It stays much closer to the book than the Disney movie, but it doesn't capture the magic of either. The Disney movie's story was different from the book, but it stood as its own version of the story. That version was classic. This film fails to capture any of the charm of the book or movie. All charm and magic is replaced by annoyance, and stupidity. The dubbing is the worst I have ever seen, and the voice actors of the dubbing do a horrendous job. The children are played by adults, and it feels so strange and awkward. I like strange things, but this the kind of strange that makes you scratch your head. The feel is all wrong. If your a big fan of the Disney film like me you will feel hurt watching this movie.

Pinocchio fmovies. Most of the public did not like the "Pinocchio" by Roberto Benigni is perfectly understandable: the new paradigm are the special effects film. The bulk of people love the movies where a machine, a car, a robot... are the protagonists. They left in second to put the feelings in the first instance to objects. It is the reason why the majority is willing to give, instead of becoming loving, being.

But there are still some weirdos that we are recognizing the value of the simple, natural, the spiritual. And these are the ones we loved a movie like "Pinocchio," a film where tenderness is the protagonist and where actors sweeten your soul to deliver true feelings, and a message of overcoming the millions of children who roam the world without encouragement or recognition.

Roberto Benigni, the great master of "Life is beautiful", wanted to be faithful to the original story that his compatriot, Carlo Collodi, published in installments in an Italian newspaper between 1882 and 1883, and as he makes his open denunciation of vice and laziness, while extolling faith, patience and understanding with a beautiful fairy (surrogate) strives to save the boy from perdition.

Benigni's Pinocchio is representing charming, mischievous, funny and he welcomes without objection that the original was a child. This is a big boy, and beside the point, because many of those who are still missing. Whoever can do without the extravagances for effect, enjoy the best with this tender film.

Benigni knows hearts. That no one can deny.

I'm an Italian-born longtime US resident, so I think I'm well-positioned to explain this film to the US public :) First and foremost, this isn't just "a film" -- it's a "Roberto Benigni" film. By that, I mean something analogous to a "Woody Allen" film, i.e. a film where the actor/director's imprint is so POWERFUL that you can't separate the two.

Imagine considering a "Woody Allen" film without taking into account the "Woody Allen" part! Well, Roberto Benigni is essentially an Italian Woody Allen -- though, IMHO, less neurotic. LOL My advice: watch other Benigni films BEFORE "Pinocchio". I highly recommend the much acclaimed "Life is Beautiful", and the much-lighter "The Monster." If you love his other films -- as I do -- you'll do just fine with "Pinocchio." Also try to understand the "Pinocchio" story before watching this movie. I grew up with it -- its popularity in Italy is like that of "The Wizard of Oz" in the USÂ… "Pinocchio" is a very old-fashioned story, with quaint charm in its heavy-handed moralistic approach. In short, a boy (or a puppet wishing to be a boy) who disregards adult advice will get into all sorts of dire situations. Skip school and get transformed into a jackass! The real charmer is the lively personality of the puppet, and the other endearing characters, both human and magical.

Benigni is PERFECT for the role of the boy-puppet. It doesn't matter one iota how old he is; it's not just an "actor" -- it's Benigni.

Once again, Benigni is THE film in a Benigni film, just like Woody is THE film in his films.

Playing a rambunctious puppet is second nature to Benigni!! He's a total natural for that.

Foolishly, I was discouraged from watching this fine film by the negative reviews. Don't do my same mistake! BTW, rent the "Italian version": it gives you A CHOICE between Italian, English and French spoken languages. I speak all 3, and listened to all 3! I recommend the original, unless you really hate subtitles.

i wonder why everyone is insulting this movie.. i think it's a great movie with a beautiful cinematography.. and about the dubbing, i watched this movie in italian with english subtitles, so there's nothing wrong with it.. then the storyline, indeed it's not like "the usual pinocchio that you've known", but for me that's the interesting point, the story is a little bit different and we need more imagination in watching the movie since it's lack of special effects, so our imagination is tested, and that's what interesting.. i think it's more like an artistic movie.. in conclusion, benigni has done a great job and pinocchio is not a "hollywood movie", so watch it..
