Liked the portrayal of a brutal way the U.S. and its West was won. So often it's glossed over that early and later settlers were generally religious dissenters, political malcontent and criminal transportation. Not forgetting ordinary dreamers, as all above had their own dream scenario, not all of it for the good. Then it follows the path of our hero is Irish Catholic, forced to convert to Anglican or Puritan faith to be accepted. Is it just Irish Catholic idea of what's in a church or a total faux pas. The crucifix in Anglican or Puritan churches of that time would amount to the sin of idolatry. Then there's the constant taunt, " Irish you can't do it, all I see is fear in your eyes". That's very strange to say the least, but overall it''s worth a watch.
Fmovies: Please change the genre titles on this movie. The movie is not even close to being an action movie. This is a drama/western that could maybe and I mean MAYBE considered to ever so slightly be considered a thriller. The movie is well shot and acted in my opinion. The story has been done a million times before though and with a movie like this you'd expect some solid action/thrills to bring some excitement to a script we've all seen executed better in previous movies. The 2 main actors were solid but this movie is boring.
Nothing better in the last 30 years. i'm speechless. damnation and hell fire this movie surpasses Unforgiven! I realize that sounds blasphemous but it's true!!!
Never Grow Old fmovies. Cusak and Hirsch shine in this morality tale about an Undertaker (Hirsch) who in a moment of weakness befriends the evil which keeps his pockets filled. Look out for the Reverend who has clearly studied the acting of Gary Oldman!
A lot of viewer put-downs for the cowardice of our film's settler community, but that's what these people were - not gun aficionados or accomplished human killers - just simple farmers & shop owners.
Signs of quality research & attention to detail: Really muddy streets; roughly cut, hand hewn lumber for the buildings; haphazard town layout; dirtiness of clothes & people; real period clothing & props; sparse furnishings (even the bedding, for once in a Western, looked right).
Two surprises: The writer/director & crew took the time to go through actual photos of this period, around late 1800s, to see how people lived. Second, amongst Westerns that I've seen in the past 10 years, a rare authenticity was found here & in "The Dark Valley". Both were made in Europe (Ireland & Luxembourg in this case). It seems that Europeans have been fascinated by our Western movie lore & have done a better job of showing it than us.
John cuzac seems to have gone the same way as Bruce Willis and Nick cage, in that he's taking a lot of crap for a wage. Usually I cringe at most of his films now, particularly as he continues to insist on dyeing his hair raven black, but he's actually amazing in this. He obviously had a lot of fun as the bad guy, as he slimes his way into a god fearing town. Emile does a stunning job of portraying conflict as the town's grave digger and coffin maker. It was a slow simmering film, with some obvious plot points and z few surprises along the way.
