At times very uncomfortable and awkward, but well paced and with balanced emotional scenes

Fmovies: I adored this. Simon Pegg talks a lot which is awesome because I do think I'd leave my husband for him and I'd hate to go to all that divorce stuff for a guy with no conversation. Lake Bell who I love has a great accent which helps and is genuinely likeable for an American playing a Brit. Well done you. All in all, yes it's got a montage but it's a montage that makes you wish you were on that date....not like a Rocky montage that makes you grateful you're not a boxer. I score it slightly less for Nancy's dreadful jumper. A happy thumbs up all round.

Simon Pegg might not be your conventional romantic comedy actor with the devilishly handsome looks but his humor and charisma shine through in this funny British film that takes place over the course of one day. He is accompanied by Lake Bell who also delivers a heartwarming performance that will win over even the most cynical of romantic comedy viewers.

Nancy (Lake Bell) is a 34 year old single woman who hasn't had much luck with dating. While traveling on a train to attend her parent's 40th wedding anniversary, she meets Jessica (Ophelia Lovibond) who leaves her a copy of a self-help book. It is this book which Jessica will be holding when her blind date, Jack (Simon Pegg) sees her at the train station. When she goes into a shop to buy herself a new copy, Nancy bumps into Jack who assumes she is his blind date. They form an instant bond but how will this be affected when Jack finds out she's pretending to be someone else?

When comparing this to the recent Sleeping with Other People, the focus on the main couple is more riveting with the subplots being funnier and linking better to the main story. There are the occasional sentimental moments but what romantic comedies don't have any of those? The situations the main characters find themselves in contribute to the humor. One of the characters that generates numerous laughs is a creepy high school acquaintance named Sean (Rory Kinnear) who still fancies Nancy. There's also a funny sequence in the bar where Jack meets up with his ex-wife, Hilary (Olivia Williams) and her boyfriend, Ed (Stephen Campbell Moore). The dialogue is crass and witty during these scenes where Nancy reveals her sexual, pornographic exploits with Jack.

Pegg and Bell have excellent chemistry together. It's easy to see how their characters would be attracted to each other. Kinnear plays his sexual deviant role to perfection while the other support actors like Williams, Lovibond and Moore help shape the overall tone of the film.

The excellent location shooting helps bring the best of London to the screen. It's a virtual trip to the tourist attractions and along with the soundtrack, ensure that the movie will be enjoyed for more than just its plot, script and acting.

Although it might be a little predictable, the charm of the main actors along with their predicaments result in an entertaining romantic comedy that is guaranteed to make you laugh. If you're a fan of Simon Pegg, there will be the added value of seeing him react to situations that maximize his comedic talents. This is one of the better romantic comedies of 2015. http://mlaimlai2.wix.com/magical-movie-review

Man Up fmovies. From the casting on up, the inexplicably-titled "Man Up" brings English charm and sophistication to its unarguably implausible plot. The choice of the very American Lake Bell as the bitter female lead who finds love anyway brings a believability that would have made a less aware actress seem unconvincing. Simon Pegg shows leading romantic man chops we haven't seem previously but his comic timing and vulnerability works for a fundamentally flawed and struggling character. The plot makes no sense especially the moment where Pegg's and Bell's characters breakup before the inescapable finale for seemingly no reason other than it was just that time in the movie where that was supposed to happen. The joke density hovers somewhere near the number that "30 Rock" would pack into a given episode although the references clearly skew toward the 40 year old crowd. In short, a great date night in choice.

I'm not a fan of romantic comedies, but I can't deny the fact that I have enjoyed various films which (in my humble opinion) transcended that label in order to become good movies on their own merit. Among the romantic comedies I liked very much, I can mention Love Actually, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, Bridget Jones' Diary and About Time. And even though I wouldn't place Man Up at the same level of those films, it kept me very entertained due to its solid combination of humor and romance, besides of the perfect chemistry between Lake Bell and Simon Pegg, who really make us wish their characters to remain together, not because the formula says so, but because the incipient relationship between them feels organic and authentic. And Man Up also achieves what many romantic comedies don't even attempt: being genuinely funny. A plot synopsis of this film might not inspire too much confidence: another "odd couple" joined by a lie which will eventually be revealed and will separate them... unless love triumphs. That doesn't sound like a movie I would be interested in watching. However, screenwriter Tess Morris knows the clichés and how to avoid, improve or using them in her favor, and as a consequence, the structure of Man Up feels comfortable and familiar, while not employing cheap emotional tricks or forced subversions of shape. In other words, this isn't a romantic comedy which denies its origins; it just makes a better use of the tools in hand. Pegg is mostly known for his work in the "geek" genre, with the films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and the TV series Spaced; however, he had already worked in some romantic comedies, which had been mediocre (Run Fatboy Run, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People). Fortunately, he had better luck in Man Up, while bringing a solid performance as the classic "normal man trapped into extraordinary circumstances". As for Bell, she plays her character without the irritating affectations or false geniality from Katherine Heigl or Jessica Biel. By the way, Bell deserves applause for the perfect British accent she adopted in Man Up; it may not reach the heights of Reneé Zellweger in Bridget Jones' Diary, but it immediately erased my fears for a North American actress playing a role obviously written for an English native. And it's not just the "accent" in the traditional sense, but also the minuscule inflections she adopted. On the negative side of Man Up, the supporting characters feel kinda superficial. The parents and sister of Bell's character feel a bit exaggerated, maybe to dissimulate their obvious function as supports of the narrative structure. And something even more notorious is the character of the jealous "ex", who certainly has funny scenes, but ends up being a caricature which negatively contrasts with the realism of the main characters. Nevertheless, it might not be a great movie, but I enjoyed Man Up pretty much, and I can recommend it to fans of romantic comedies, and also to the detractors of the genre (such as me), because it proves the possibility of creating a story inside the established parameters, but with enough narrative ability to overcome the expectations generally inspired by the films of this kind.

Well, this movie was unexpected! When we decided to watch it, I was kind of in the middle, as British humour is not easy for a non-native to fully grasp. And it was true that in times within the movie, I did find myself wondering about some of the things being said.

Other than that, this was a brilliant, funny but also really deep at moments, movie that I really liked. Dealing with issues such as the estrangement of people in urban areas, failed marriages, etc, it was nice to watch. A situation and the characters that may as well be true in many cases, even with people we know.

Although in some cases it bordered with these silly "Love-Actually" type of movies (which I also pleasantly watch), it remains quite serious and pragmatic. I really liked the creepy high-school lover that could not stop obsessing about her... Amazing acting altogether!
